Dry Needling
DRY NEEDLING
Dry Needling can be incorporated into your Remedial Massage appointment
Also referred to as clinical or western acupuncture (but is in no way your traditional acupuncture) Dry Needling uses solid acupuncture needles to enter the skin and tissue below.
The benefits of Dry Needling include:
- Promotion of local healing
- Reduction of pain
- Restored muscle function
- A calming effect and an improvement of well-being
The basic steps of Dry Needling:
- When using dry needling techniques for the treatment of trigger points, the therapist will palpate the target muscle for a taut band (or area of tense muscles) thereby confirming the trigger point that needs to be treated.
- The needle is typically in a tube and it is fixed with the non-needling hand against the trigger point using a pincer grip or flat palpation depending on the location and orientation of the muscle. A palpation is when the therapist feels with their fingers or hands to pinpoint areas of tenderness. With the needling hand, the needle is gently loosened from the tube and the top of the needle is tapped or flicked by the therapist, allowing the needle to penetrate the skin.
- With Dry Needling, the needle is guided toward the trigger point until the therapist feels resistance or notices that the patient has a local twitch response. A local twitch response is a spinal cord reflex that creates an involuntary contraction that can be triggered by a snapping palpitation or penetration with a needle. When the patient has an involuntary twitch response that suggests that the needle has hit the right spot.
- When the needle has located the trigger point, as suggested by the local twitch response, the therapist will focus on this specific area or other neighbouring areas.
- The needle can stay in place for a certain period of time or can be redirected back toward the layer of tissue directly under the skin without taking it out of the skin and then back towards the trigger point. This can continue for a few minutes until local twitch responses have stopped or the patient can no longer tolerate the needling at that site.
- When the needle is withdrawn from the skin, pressure is then applied directly to the skin over the insertion in order to aid in the prevention of possible swelling or soreness.
Is Dry Needling Acupuncture?
Dry Needling is not acupuncture and too many times we hear people say it is.
Yes, it is similar to acupuncture in the sense that we use acupuncture needles, but acupuncture treats the liver, spleen, meridian points and acupuncture points. Whereas dry needling is working specifically on soft tissue (muscle/Trigger Points) and treating muscular skeletal problems.
Speak to your Remedial Massage Therapist about incorporating dry needling in to your next treatment.
Myofascial Cupping
MYOFASCIAL CUPPING
Cupping can be incorporated into your Remedial Massage appointment
Cupping started over 3000 years BC in Egyptian, Greek and Asian cultures. Cupping was administered using animal horns to help drain toxins out of snakebites.
Over time it was shown how effective cupping was for the muscles and muscular problems, moving from using animal horns, to bamboo cups, then glass, plastic and rubber cups.
Today, Myofascial cupping is used to improve circulation, reduce tissue tension and stimulate the peripheral and autonomic nervous systems.
Body Balance Health and Wellness use static cupping with a vacuum pump that keeps the cups on the skin in the same spot for 10mins. We also use fire cupping as a form of gliding cupping, which moves the cups along the skin and muscle for a more broad release.
During a Remedial Massage your muscles are pushed down by the therapists, hands, fingers, forearms or elbows using a positive/downward pressure whereas cupping does the opposite. Cupping lifts and draws the muscle upwards using a negative/upwards pressure allowing the muscles to be stretched and relaxed.
Myofascial cupping is just another modality to help get the muscles functioning back to functioning at its full capacity.
Myofascial Cupping can help with:
- Lower Back pain
- Headaches
- Neck stiffness
- Arthritic problems
- Shoulder injuries
- Sport injuries
- Stress and Fatigue
The benefits of Myofascial Cupping include:
- Increased blood flow to the injured areas
- Reduces fluid accumulation i.e. decreased oedema
- Stretches the muscle tissue resulting in better Range of Movement
- Gives relief for muscle and joint pain
- Helps break down scar tissue from old injuries
- Strengthens the immune system by promoting the flow of lymphatic fluid
- Stimulates the nervous system, causing an increase of endorphins and a decrease in pain
- Improves circulation to reduce inflammation
This is just to name a few! Speak to your Remedial Massage Therapist about incorporating cupping in to your next treatment.
Kinesiology taping
KINESIOLOGY TAPING
Kinesiology taping can be incorporated into your Remedial Massage appointment
This treatment is used to help with pain, taping for swelling/recovery and taping for posture.
The benefits of Kinesiology taping include:
- Allowing for full functional range of motion
- Limits atrophy
- Enhances restoration of normal function and decreases compensatory reactions
- Provides increased afferent sensory stimulation
- Quicker healing process as you can still move and allows blood flow for healing
Kinesiology can help with:
- Oedema
- Muscle pain
- Scars
- Posture
- During Pregnancy

Manual Lymphatic Drainage
MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be incorporated into your Remedial Massage appointment
(MLD) Manual Lymphatic Drainage is light, skin stretching massage technique that aids in the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body. It is especially helpful in moving fluid out of a swollen limb as a result of lymphedema, acute injury, arthritis, surgery or illness. MLD helps the lymph collectors adequately move protein and fluid through the system, restoring its function and ability.
MLD can offer the following benefits:
- Deeply relaxing.
- Decongestive (removes lymphoedema)
- Pain Relieving.
- Improves wound healing and scarring
How does Manual Lymphatic Drainage work?
At the start of the session you will be in a lying position beginning with deep diaphragmatic breathing. This helps activate the deep abdominal lymph pathways it also helps to relax the body and mind as well as increase fluid movement into the heart. Next we will move on to a opening sequence which involves a soft gentle massage around the clavicle and up the neck along the base of the skull and along the jaw.
This slow, gentle sequence is performed 3-5 times and can be deeply soothing. MLD is first directed at unaffected body parts to clear them of residual fluid so the affected areas can be drained and fluid moved through. This is know as “decongestion”.
As we move through the body in a proximal (close to the body) to distal (away from the body) manner we will open areas of lymph nodes as we treat, using slow, rhythmical gentle pressure.
MLD can be administered as a stand-alone treatment or as a part of a remedial massage treatment.

It’s aim is to soothe and relax the muscles and nervous system. This form of massage involves using a sequence of techniques focused on both the physical and ethereal body.
What are the benefits of Modernised Indian Head Massage?

What are the major differences?
- The focus is on Shoulders, Neck, Chest and Jaw to help alleviate common injuries and conditions associated with today’s modern lifestyles
- The client is lying flat on the massage table, compared to a seated position of a Traditional Indian Head Massage (this allows the massage to be offered as an “add on” to a regular treatment)
- There is more focus on the skeletal and muscular systems using customised strokes, whereas the traditional system focuses more on the lymphatic and circulatory system
- Traditional Indian techniques are still used for the face and scalp, however deep tissue strokes are used for the neck and shoulders, chest and jaw.

REFLEXOLOGY
Feel relaxed with Reflexology….
Reflexology is a type of therapy that uses gentle pressure on specific points along your feet. The theory is that this eases stress, which helps you relax and allows your body to work better.
The way reflexology connects spots on the outside of your body to the inside is a bit like acupuncture and acupressure, but those therapies use points all over your body, not just on your feet.
As with any kind of massage, the benefits of Reflexology can last for several days after your treatment
What are the benefits of Reflexology?
- Reduction in stress and anxiety
- Improvement in nerve function
- Improvement in Blood Circulation
- Lifts your Mood
- Reduces Pain
There are different theories about the exact way that reflexology works. The main concept is that different areas of the feet are linked to specific body parts, and that putting pressure on one area of the foot can have an effect on the organ that it corresponds with.
How does Reflexology work?
According to zone theory, a foot is divided into five zones that run from toe to heel: The big toe is zone 1, and the pinkie toe is zone 5. The body is divided into 10 zones that run from head to foot.
Zone 1 aligns with the left and right centre of the body, and zone 5 aligns with the left and right sides of the body. When you place pressure on zone 1 in the foot, it can relieve pain in the part of the body that’s linked to that area.
It will make you walk out of the treatment room like you are floating on a cloud.
It is a must TRY!

FIFO MASSAGE
Do you have a company in the mining industry based on a remote site? You could bring Remedial Massage Therapy services to your camp site!
It can be hard for employees to work away for weeks at a time and receive no maintenance treatments on their bodies. Working away can also be mentally and physically tough, and as a company you want to support your employees as much as possible to keep them happy and reduce their risk of injuries.
What are the benefits of FIFO Massage?

There are a few ways we can do this, if you would like more information please contact us!
